49-inch ultrawide monitors also referred to as “super ultrawide” or “32:9“, have seen a surge in popularity since the beginning of 2020, and are now very much in demand.
Super ultrawide monitors are a great way to get more screen real estate without having to buy a multi-monitor setup. They try to offer a better experience, whether it’s more room for multitasking or an immersive gaming/movie-watching experience.
They’re also very, very cool.
49-inch ultrawide monitors have about as much screen real estate as two 27-inch side by side, but without the bezels in the middle.
There are many different 49-inch ultrawide monitor models with varying specifications; most offer a resolution of 5120×1440 pixels, but 3840×1080 pixels models are also available.
Two popular use cases for these monitors are professional/productivity and gaming.
Professional/Productivity: In the world of professional, productivity-heavy use, the 49-inch monitor is quickly becoming a popular option.
Since these displays offer a much wider field of view than a standard 16:9 monitor, this makes them great for multitasking and getting work done. For example, large spreadsheets will appear less cramped, which is ideal for professionals who need to analyze metric loads of information.
So if you need a solid, big monitor for professional use, a 49-inch monitor will bring a lot to the table.
Gaming: They can also offer an incredibly immersive gaming experience for racing games, flight simulators, RTS titles, and so on. However, they aren’t quite as widely compatible with games or videos that aren’t prepared for such a ratio.
So this is something to look out for if your primary motivator for getting a 49-inch display is to play a particular game.
Some monitors can even display two input sources at the same time, allowing you to switch the connected keyboard and mouse as you please between them, using the built-in KVM switch.
In this guide, we will go over some of the best 49-inch ultrawide monitors available today, and we will also discuss some of the features you should look for when shopping for a super ultrawide monitor.

1. Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 – Mini-LED Brilliance
The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is the successor to last year’s Odyssey G9, which was already an impressive super ultrawide gaming monitor. This new version adds more features to improve the HDR experience and gaming performance, including a brand new Mini-LED panel, 2,048 local dimming zones, 2,000 nits brightness, HDMI 2.1 ports, and immersive RGB lighting.
Like the previous model, Samsung went with a 1000R curved design, glossy plastic back, and an RGB-lit ring at the back, which Samsung calls it Infinity Core lighting. What’s better is that the RGB lighting can now synchronize with what is displayed on the screen for a more immersive gaming experience.
Onboard you get all the usual screen-split bells and whistles, so you can use this monitor as a daily driver for work and home office. The stand can swivel, tilt, and height-adjust, allowing you to find the perfect position for work or gaming. There’s also a 100×100 mm VESA plate if you’d like to save desk space with an ultrawide monitor arm.
Image Quality
The display is the biggest change from the Odyssey G9. The Neo G9 features Quantum Matrix Technology, which combines a Mini-LED display with 2,048 local dimming zones and 2,000 nits peak brightness to deliver a stunning picture quality. It has darker blacks and better contrast than all 49-inch super ultrawide monitors in the market.
The previous model (and most HDR-enabled LED monitors) has only ten local dimming zones, which results in noticeable blooming and halo effect around bright objects. Samsung ramped up the dimming zones to 2,048, allowing the Neo G9 to achieve a high native contrast ratio and higher brightness, resulting in a drastic improvement in HDR picture quality. You’re still going to see some bloom, but only in really demanding scenes.
Other display specifications remain unchanged. You’re getting the same 5120×1440 resolution with a VA panel and 240Hz refresh rate. The display is G-Sync and FreeSync compatible and has a faster 1ms response time for a smooth and powerful gaming experience. Onboard, you get excellent in-game enhancements such as Black Equalizer to give you a competitive advantage over your opponents.
Connectivity
The Odyssey Neo G9 isn’t just for PC gaming. There are two HDMI 2.1 ports for you to connect your next-gen gaming PC or the latest generation of gaming consoles.

- Dual HDMI 2.1 ports
- Ergonomic stand

49-Inch Super Ultrawide Monitor Buying Guide – Things to Consider
We’ve set up this guide to help in your search for the best 49-inch super ultrawide monitor for your office/gaming setup. We’ve covered all the things you need to know to help you find just the right super ultrawide monitor for your needs, whether it’s for gaming, productivity, or content creation.
Screen Splitting Software
Whether you’re a programmer, professional content creator, data analyst, or multitasking pro, you’ll benefit more from a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor using screen split software. A screen split software comes in handy if you’re buying a super ultrawide monitor to add more screen real estate to multitask or replace dual monitors. It allows you to partition the screen into various layouts of multiple windows for seamless multitasking.
The combination of 49-inch super ultrawide and a screen split software eliminates the hassle of shuffling between multiple windows and tabs on two or more monitors, making multitasking effortless. Advanced split-screen software lets you view content from two PC sources side-by-side, great for professionals such as graphics designers working on both Mac and PC.
The Odyssey G9 comes with a feature-rich screen split software, Easy Settings Box, but it uses a VA panel. If you want the picture quality of IPS panels, Dell U4919DW and LG 49WL95C-W also include excellent screen splitting software. Should you buy a 49-inch ultrawide monitor that does not come with a screen split software, you can use third-party options such as DisplayFusion, but the best are not free.
KVM Switch
KVM (Keyboard-Video-Mouse) Switch allows you to share a single set of keyboard, mouse, and monitor among multiple computers. If you work on multiple PCs, you can save desk space, time, and money by buying a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor with a built-in KVM switch. With this, you don’t have to purchase a separate keyboard/mouse for each PC or waste time disconnecting and connecting cables each time you switch to a different PC.
Most 49-inch super ultrawide monitors come with built-in KVM capabilities, except those dedicated to gaming. However, there are external HDMI KVM Switches in the market you can buy to add KVM capabilities to your 49-inch ultrawide gaming monitor.
Resolution
Resolution is very vital for a monitor of this size. You don’t want to spend so much money only to struggle reading the content on the screen. Resolution and size determine the pixel density, which results in either sharp or blurry display. Higher pixel density results in sharp, detailed images and crisper text. For any monitor, not just 49-inch, make sure to go for a higher resolution as you go up on size.
Most 49-inch super ultrawide monitors come with 5120x1440p or 3840x1080p resolutions. If you’re buying a super ultrawide monitor for productivity work such as coding, content creation, and browsing (web pages & documents), always go for 5120x1440p resolution to get sharper picture quality and crisper text. The extra pixels make the content on the 5120x1440p sharper, including crisper texts and lines.
For gaming, there is no significant difference, so you’re free to get either of them. But if you want detailed and sharper images, a higher resolution is always better. Note that you’ll need a powerful GPU to drive those many pixels.
Panel Type
Vertically Aligned (VA) panels dominate the ultrawide sector, offering better black uniformity, higher contrast ratio, and better performance in dark rooms. Gaming performance on these monitors is also outstanding. They can achieve a 1ms faster response time and higher refresh rates with no issues. For instance, the Odyssey G9 with a VA panel features a 1ms response time (GtG) and 240Hz refresh rate, great for competitive gaming.
However, VA panels suffer from narrow viewing angles and poor color reproduction, and if you’re a professional content creator, this is not the kind of 49-inch super ultrawide monitor you need.If you’re in the creative industry, we highly recommend getting a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor with an IPS panel. In-plane switching (IPS) panels offer the best picture quality, color reproduction, and wide viewing angles. They display consistent, accurate colors and picture quality across the screen, no matter where you’re viewing from, excellent when sharing the screen with a colleague.
There are not many 49-inch ultrawide monitors with IPS panels in the market. At the time of publishing, only the Dell U4919DW and LG 49WL95C-W have IPS panels. They are professional monitors, so don’t expect excellent gaming performance on these monitors.
For a more in-depth guide on panel types we recommend checking our related guide on monitor panel types.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
HDR can significantly improve the picture quality of a display and make your games and movies more immersive. It makes dark areas on a picture appear darker and bright areas brighter, improving the contrast ratio so that the display closely resembles real life. Colors and highlights pop more in HDR than SDR mode resulting in more realism and true-to-life images.
Not all 49-inch super ultrawide monitors support HDR. And the available HDR-compatible monitors don’t have the same HDR performance. For the best HDR performance, you need a higher brightness (~1,000 nits) and a wide color gamut. Full-Array Local Dimming makes a huge difference, but no super ultrawide monitor supports that yet. With a higher contrast ratio, VA panels produce excellent HDR picture quality than other panels.
If you want the best HDR experience, Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is the kind of 49-inch super ultrawide monitor you need. It supports HDR 2000 with up to 2,000 nits and 2, 048 local dimming zones, 95% DCI-P3, and a VA panel. The Mini-LED display delivers the best HDR picture quality with minimal blooming and halo effect. Monitors that support HDR400 and HDR10 standards deliver a decent HDR experience, but if you’re buying solely for HDR, monitors with at least HDR 1000 offers the best HDR experience.
Curvature
It’s typical to find monitors of this size curved. A curved screen wraps around your field of view, providing the same viewing distance and picture quality from where you’re sitting to every corner of the display. This means less head movement and more immersion when gaming.
The degree of curvature is different from model to model. Gaming focused super ultrawide monitors tend to be aggressively curved than those targeting productivity and multitasking tasks. If you need more gaming immersion, the Odyssey G9 with a 1000R curve is a good recommendation. Otherwise, you won’t go wrong with any other 49-inch super ultrawide monitors with a 1800R curvature.
Refresh Rate and Response time
With more games now supporting ultrawide aspect ratios, including the 32:9, the demand for 49-inch super ultrawide gaming monitors is set to rise. There are already great options that offer impressive gaming features. If you’re a competitive gamer, you want at least 1ms response time, higher refresh rates (above 60Hz), and support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR).
Faster response time eliminates ghosting and motion blur on fast-moving objects, typical in competitive FPS titles. Generally, anything less than 4ms is great, but you’ll get more responsive and clearer gameplay using a 1ms panel. On the same note, higher refresh rates (144Hz and above) eliminates choppy frame rates for a fluid and smooth gaming experience.
There are just no better 49-inch super ultrawide gaming monitors in the market than Samsung’s Odyssey G9 Series, with a 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. If you’re on a budget, Deco Gear 49″ Curved Ultrawide with 144Hz and 4ms response time is an excellent alternative.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
Support for VRR, such as FreeSync, is also vital when looking for a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor for gaming. VRR syncs the monitor’s refresh rate to the frame rates of a graphics card (gaming PC or console) to prevent screen tearing and stuttering. Screen tearing occurs when your monitor cannot keep up to the frame rates pushed by a GPU, resulting in more than one frame being displayed at a time.
Screen tearing is terrible and can make games unplayable. It is most common in monitors with low refresh rates, such as 60Hz. To prevent this, ensure to get a monitor that supports FreeSync or G-Sync. The best 49-inch super ultrawide monitors support FreeSync Premium Pro (also known as FreeSync2), which includes LFC and FreeSync HDR. FreeSync Premium Pro delivers smooth gameplay with the best HDR experience.
Multiple super ultrawide monitors support FreeSync2 (refer to our comparison table).
A monitor that’s both FreeSync and G-Sync compatible is recommended to ensure higher compatibility with Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Monitors supporting low FreeSync tiers work just fine, but they don’t offer the best HDR experience.
Connectivity
Are you using the monitor solely for gaming or productivity? If you’re buying a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor for productivity and office use, ensure you’re getting as many ports as possible, including USB-A and USB-C ports for peripherals. All the 49-inch monitors available have multiple video inputs, necessary if you want to connect more than one PC to the monitor at a time.
Type-C port is a great feature to look out for when buying a 49-inch super ultrawide monitor for productivity. A monitor with a PD capable Type-C port makes it easy to connect your work laptop and minimize cable clutter on your desk since you only require one cable for power and video. The good news is that most 49-inch super ultrawide come with USB-C ports, including the Samsung CHG90 (1080p) with two Type-C 95W PD ports and Philips Brilliance 499P9H (1440p) with one port 90W PD.
Webcam and Microphone
A built-in webcam is an excellent addition to a monitor designed for office use. It allows you to easily make video calls (zoom classes and corporate video meetings) and securely log in to your system using Windows Hello. This can save you some money you’d otherwise spend on an external webcam.
However, this is a feature not common in most monitors. Philips Brilliance 499P9H is the only 49-inch super ultrawide monitor that comes with a built-in webcam and microphone.
Ergonomics and VESA Compatibility
The best 49-inch super ultrawide monitors offer different adjustments for a comfortable viewing experience. It’s essential if working on the monitor for long hours and can also help you find the best viewing angles. Adjusting the screen reduces strain and pain from always moving your head or shoulders to see some parts on the screen.
Ensure the monitor supports height, tilt, and swivel adjustments. Note that pivot is not supported in most ultrawide monitors because they are too wide.VESA compatibility is a must if you want to mount the monitor on the wall or use a VESA mounting arm. Most VESA mounts in the market support 100×100 mm VESA holes. You also want a heavy-duty VESA mount to support the massive weight of super ultrawide monitors. We have an in-depth buying guide of the best ultrawide monitor mounts in the market.
Super Ultrawide Monitors FAQ
Can I split the 49″ screen into multiple virtual monitors?
Yes, most monitors come with screen splitting software. Splitting the screen makes the virtual displays behave like individual monitors. You can drag windows from one to another and do anything you’d do on a classic multiple monitor setup.
Do 49-inch super-ultrawides work with integrated GPU laptops?
Yes, even old, entry-level laptops can support the 5120×1440 resolution of the monitor.
As a rule of thumb, if your laptop has an HDMI, DP, or USB-C it can output the needed resolution.
Can a 49″ monitor power my Macbook via the USB-C video cable?
It depends. Some models can output up to 95 Watts, which is enough to power the even most power-hungry Macbook Pro 16″. On the other hand, other models don’t offer USB-C power output.
You can check the power output for each monitor in our comparison table for more info.
Can a monitor arm support the weight of a super-ultrawide?

Yes, when it comes to gaming, the specs are there. Super-ultrawide models with 1ms response time, g-sync, freesync, and up to 240hz refresh rate can compete with classic monitors.
That being said, there some games that place black bars and run in classic 16:9 aspect ratio, or they stretch the image to fit all the 32:9 screen, but overall, the gaming industry is starting to embrace and support the 49″ super-ultrawides.
Bottom Line
Super ultrawide monitors are slowly taking over the market and is because of the benefits and flexibility that they bring.
While it may take you multiple monitors set up to achieve the best multitasking. You still have to deal with the bezels separating the monitors and degrading picture quality on-off angles.
Ultrawide monitors bring a seamless desktop experience with unique curvature and a wide 32:9 aspect ratio to give you a lot of space to fit several windows. Screen Split and KVM allows you to use the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse with multiple display sources.
The VESA wall mount arm comes in handy when you have limited desk space, or you want to achieve zero desk footprint. It is rigid and firm enough to bear the weight of these 49inch super ultrawide monitors.
