If you have bought one of the latest laptops recently, you would have noticed the absence of USB Type-A ports. No, the manufacturers haven’t forgotten to put them in, nor have they decided to short-change you.

Instead of the USB Type-A port, the manufacturers now offer you USB-C (also known as USB Type-C) ports. USB-C is a connector that allows you to connect external peripherals. You can use it to implement USB 3.1, 3.2, or 4.0. Additionally, it is also used to implement Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4.

Both these technologies are similar and offer you significantly more advantages over the traditional USB Type-A ports.

For instance, USB-C ports offer you a data transfer rate of up to 10Gbps, while Thunderbolt takes it to 40Gbps. Further, these ports offer the added benefit of audio/video signals and power delivery to charge your devices.

What this meant was that manufacturers could offer the same set of utilities with the use of just one port. Thus, making their laptops lighter, thinner, and better oriented to deliver high performance.

Additionally, USB-C allows manufacturers to make devices that you could use with your laptop and your mobile device.

The USB-C flash drive is one such device.

In this article, we review USB-C flash drives that give you the best that this technology has to offer. Later, we will highlight some key considerations you should keep in mind before you purchase one. After that, we will address some frequently asked questions.

Before getting into in-depth reviews, here’s our list at a glance:

The Ultra USB Type-C comes in four different capacities, from 16GB to 128GB. The device is one of the most compact flash drives you will find on the market, having a size of 7x20x41mm. The drive has a sleek design that enables it to retract back into a protective case which is made out of durable plastic and metal.

Performance

Its 256GB capacity paired with high read speeds ensures that you will transfer and store data on your device without any problems.

Its 300mb/s read speed is what makes this drive stand out from the competition. Most drives on the USB type C flash drives on the market clock at half the reading speeds of the Duo Plus.

While write speeds clocked pretty low at 43.8MB/s during testing, but the drive clocked at 300.4 MB/s read speeds. Less than the advertised 400MBps but still very fast.

The only downers would be the lack of password protection and its steep price.

For a 128GB drive, the read speed clocked at 140MBps, and also reached a decent write speed of 56.6 MB/s. The 256GB variant works faster, but it should be mentioned here that the drive gets warm when you’re transferring a lot of data.

8. Kingston 64GB DataTraveler Micro Duo 3C USB / USB-C 3.1 – Best Flash Drive for Smartphones

This small device comes with USB-A and USB-C connectors and supports USB 3.1 connectivity, making it a versatile flash drive. The device can thus be used to connect to devices that have Thunderbolt 3 ports and standard USB 2.0 ports, though, with the latter, the speeds will be much slower.

Kingston DataTraveler comes in four data capacities 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. While we were a bit disappointed there was no 256GB variant, the 128Gb model is enough for most people’s needs. The 16 Gb model has a lower write speed of 10mb/s.

The thumb drive isn’t the fastest on our list, but it is still decent in terms of performance. The read speeds go up to 100MB/s, and write speeds of around 15mb/s. The 16 GB variant offers 100MB/s in read speed and 10MB/s in write speed. All other variants offer 100MB/s in read speed and 15MB/s in write speed.

The Kingston DataTraveler comes in an aluminum casing, meaning it is resistant to wear and tear. The downside is that the cover is made out of plastic, which might crack if you dropped it on a hard surface, but that shouldn’t have an impact on its performance.

The USB Type-C connector is covered by a plastic cap which protects it from dust and scratches. The Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C has a built-in grip from which you can attach the device to your key chain. But if you do that, the USB 3.0 port will remain without protection. It would have been best if the device came with protection caps for both ends.

The flash drive is very small, having the dimensions of 1.17 x 0.65 x 0.33 inches or 29.94 x 16.60 x 8.44 mm in width x depth and height.

While there are no security features, the device has a warranty that is available for five years, which leaves you with enough time to return it should it malfunction.

When connected, the device will reach temperatures between 32°F to 140°F or 0°C to 60°C.

The device is compatible with almost all major operating systems, from Windows 7 to Windows 10, to Mac OS X, to Linux, Android, Windows 10 Mobile, and Chrome OS.

Performance

When tested using CrystalDiskMark, the USB Type-C port on the Kingston DataTraveler with 16GB of storage space. The results show that the device delivered read speeds that were slightly above those specified by the manufacturer.

With a 1.44 GB file transfer, the registered writing speed was around 94.5 MB/s.

When the USB Type-A was tested with CrystalDiskMark, the speeds actually improved, especially the writing speed. The read and write speeds clocked at 134 MB/s and 12 MB/s, respectively.

The MosDART dual flash drive features Type-C 3.0 and USB Type-A 3.0 connectors. It does not have a 256GB version, but it comes in two capacities; 32GB and 64GB. The read and write speeds vary depending on the capacity of the model. The 32GB model has up to 100 MB/s read speeds and up to 50 MB/s write speeds.

What we liked about this drive is that it has a lengthened USB-C connector which will allow connecting to your phone, even though it has the bulkiest of cases.

The flash drive is compatible with the operating systems of most tablets, phones, and PC’s, with the device being read in a few seconds after it gets connected.

This USB Thumb drive from THKAILAR offers the user plenty of flexibility.

First off, you get the USB-C and the USB Type-A connectors to connect to the devices of your choice. The device does not require any special drivers. Hence, you can plug and play with any Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android device.

Next, the device comes in six variants. These start from 32GB and go up to 1TB storage capacity. Hence, you have the flexibility to choose what capacity suits your need the best. The read speeds offered by the device are 130MBps. It is not the fastest on our list, but it offers significant utility and will allow you to play uninterrupted videos.

The design features a metal body with USB-C and USB Type-A ports at each end. These ports are protected with caps. This helps to protect the pins when the drive is lying open to the element. Further, the body also incorporates a loop so you can attach it with your key chain.

You also get the flexibility to choose what color you can have the device in. There are three options, red, black, or gold. However, be sure to check the capacity after you select the color. This is because some colors are exclusive to a variant.

Unfortunately, the feature list ends there. There is nothing on offer by way of Apps to manage your files. The device does not offer any security features like password protection. Hence, it is a very basic device in its operation, leading to limited but effective use cases.

Performance

The 128GB variant of the flash drive from THKAILAR delivers on its promises. It offers read speeds of 120MBps and write speeds of up to 70MBps. However, it offers you about 117.5GB of storage once you have it setup and ready to go. This is because it reserves the remaining for its formatting and algorithms.

Our Take

If you need a USB drive that offers you a good data transfer speed, consider the one from Thkailar. Depending on the variant you choose, you get Write speeds from 60MBps to 130MBps. The drive comes in three storage variants that start from 32GB and go up to 128GB. These are simple plug-and-play devices that do not require specialized drivers. The device works like a charm whether you run Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android. Also, it is backward compatible with all USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces. Hence, you do not need to bother with urgent upgrades if you use older computing or mobile devices.

The design is a simplistic one. It uses a Zinc alloy metal casing to protect the drive. Further, it boasts of a 360-degree swivel cover that only covers one port at a time. This has its drawback. For starters, it only manages to protect one port at a time. That too is not well enough. The pins are still vulnerable to damage caused by environmental elements such as dust.

Lexar claims that this drive has been put through the rigors of extreme testing. This includes extreme temperature, shock testing, protection from X-Ray and Magnets. While this may sound very rugged, remember we are talking about a humble flash drive. Most use cases will not justify such extreme testing. Hence, while it is nice to know this, do not be overawed by it.

Finally, the Lexar does not come with file management apps or security features. Hence, if you are a savvy user of such devices, this may be the ideal flash drive for you. However, there are better drives in the market if you are in search of a more user-friendly and intuitive product.

Performance

Lexar promises a Read Speed of 100MB/s and a Write Speed of 30MB/s. It is among the very few that has lived up to the mentioned speeds. Lexar is a trusted brand known to promise less and deliver more. Nonetheless, both these speeds are impressive.

The Duo Link from PNY comes in three variants starting from 32GB and up to 128GB. It allows you to conveniently transfer all your pictures, videos, and other files back and forth from your devices.

This flash drive from PNY uses USB 3.1 standards and offers you data transfer speeds of up to 10Gpbs. They claim to offer you 130MB/s of read speed but remain silent on the write speed they offer.

The design comprises a slide-out mechanism that houses the USB-C and USB Type-A ports at each end. The design attempts to provide protection from accidental drops. However, this is certainly not adequate, especially if you are a business professional on the move. This is primarily because of the plastic casing that covers the USB drive.

Nonetheless, it is an excellent device to have for the price. Yes, the use cases get limited due to questionable durability. Further, the absence of a keyring hole is apparent if you travel often. However, the Duo Link allows you to transfer your photos and view them on your TV. It is a limited use case, but one that is convenient and cost-effective.

Performance

PNY remains silent on the write speed it delivers. The write speed tested is about 16MB/s.The read speed that they promise is 130MB/s. Remember this number can be misleading as it is often dependent on the content. However, rest assured you can expect it to deliver 100MB/s with ease.

The convertible port is a 3-in-1 port that can be used as a Lightning, micro-USB, or Type-A port. It does not require an adapter to switch between them. You need to flip USB Type-A’s connector to reveal the two-remaining port.

Apart from the great utility, the device also offers multiple color options to keep your work environment looking aesthetic. There are five colors to choose from: purple, blue, and red.

Best USB-C Thumb Drives – Our Buying Guide

There are hundreds of USB-C thumb drives available in the market. Hence, choosing one that is right for you can be a task. Therefore, it is vital that you ask yourself a few basic questions before you start.

For instance, how much storage capacity do I need? What devices do I intend to use the drive with? Have I used such a device in the past? Do I need to my computer to use such a device?

All of these questions (and more) will lead you to answers to crucial considerations that you must keep in mind. These are:

Storage capacity

There are several options that you can choose from. Starting from 16GB and going up to about 1TB, the options are plenty. Hence, you must evaluate your need and choose wisely.

We recommend a 128GB storage; this would take care of most users’ needs.

Additional connectors

Not all devices use only USB-C ports. There are plenty of computers that still use only USB Type-A ports. However, your data may be confined to the drive without a USB Type-A port.

The most common alternative to a USB-C port is a USB Type-A port. Manufacturers recognize this, and almost all of them offer it in addition to the USB-C port. This is great as it will make your drive compatible with several older computing devices.

Some drives even offer Lightning and micro-USB connectors for added compatibility. Thus, the device from Zarmst is an excellent option for its sheer versatility.

Read/Write Speed

Read and Write speed refers to the speed of the data transfer the device is capable of. Ideally, a good read speed is 100MB/s. Anything less than that is ordinary. Similarly, anything above 30MB/s of write speed is generally considered good.

The devices from ROKHY and Samsung are great because they offer speeds over 400MB/s.

Protection from Wear and Tear

USB flash drives are probably the most convenient way to transfer vast amounts of data between devices. As a result, these devices are subjected to wear and tear.

To avoid critical damage to the device, manufacturers offer features like metal bodies and plastic caps to protect the ports. These go a long way to keeping your device safe.

Further, some manufacturers focus on using Chip-on-board technology. This tends to reduce the risk of exposure to dust and water.

Therefore, you need to buy a sturdy device that can take considerable abuse, especially when moving.

The device from Lexar is put through plenty of punishment to ensure durability.

File Management, Backup, and Security Feature

USB drives are small and can contain sensitive data. Hence, it is important to keep the data safe and secure.

Devices offered by SanDisk come with a security feature to keep your data safe.

These are some of the critical factors that you should keep in mind before you make a purchase. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list. Hence, there may be certain use cases that are very specific to a user’s needs. With a careful evaluation, you can come up with your own solution. However, for the majority, these factors or a combination of these factors should do the trick.
