Why aren’t there any consumer-grade Thunderbolt 3 flash drives?

Thunderbolt 3 is a new connectivity standard which is getting more and more attention from manufacturers as the technology brings more versatility and efficiency.

But while there are many devices featuring the Thunderbolt 3 dock, flash drives based on the technology are scarce on the market.

The first prototype of a Thunderbolt flash drive was first presented by Intel at an electronics show viewing, and that was about it.

Most manufacturers have stayed away from producing Thunderbolt flash drives, as they would incur a price increase due to the chipset and licensing requirements. The high cost discourages customers and manufacturers have no choice but to focus on more affordable devices.

But there are alternatives – USB-C Flash Drives.

If you do absolutely need external storage with Thunderbolt 3 support, then feel free to check out our round-up of the best external hard drives with TB3.

Many laptops and desktops that support Thunderbolt 3 ports can be connected to USB-C type 3 devices, as they have the same connector shape.

This means that you can use your USB-C flash drive to plug it into one of the Thunderbolt 3 ports.

10. Kingston 64GB DataTraveler Micro Duo 3C USB / USB-C 3.1 – Best Flash Drive for Smatphones

This small device comes with USB-A and USB-C connectors and supports USB 3.1 connectivity, which makes it a versatile flash drive. The device can thus be used to connect to devices that have Thunderbolt 3 ports and standard USB 2.0 ports, though with the latter the speeds will be much slower.

Kingston DataTraveler comes in four data capacities 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. While we were a bit disappointed there was no 256gb variant, the 128gb model is enough for most people’s needs. The 16 Gb model has a lower write speed of 10mb/s.

The thumb drive isn’t the fastest on our list, but it is still decent in terms of performance. The read speeds go up to 100mb/s, and write speeds of around 15mb/s. The 16 GB variant offers 100MB/s in read speed and 10MB/s in write speed. All other variants offer 100MB/s in read speed and 15MB/s in write speed.

The Kingston DataTraveler comes in an aluminum casing, meaning it is resistant to wear and tear. The downside is that the cover is made out of plastic, which might crack if you dropped it on a hard surface, but that shouldn’t have an impact on its performance.

The USB Type-C connector is covered by a plastic cap which protects it from dust and scratches. The Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C has a built-in grip from which you can attach the device to your key chain. But if you do that, the USB 3.0 port will remain without protection. It would have been best if the device came with protection caps for both ends.

The flash drive is very small, having the dimensions of 1.17 x 0.65 x 0.33 inches or 29.94 x 16.60 x 8.44 mm in width x depth and height.

While there are no security features, the device has a warranty which is available for 5 years, which leaves you with enough time to return it should it malfunction.

When connected, the device will reach temperatures between 32°F to 140°F or 0°C to 60°C.

The device is compatible with almost all major operating systems, from Windows 7 to Windows 10, to Mac OS X, to Linux, Android, Windows 10 Mobile and Chrome OS.

Performance
When tested using CrystalDiskMark, the USB Type-C port on the Kingston DataTraveler with 16GB of storage space. The results show that the device delivered read speeds which were slightly above those specified by the manufacturer.

With a 1.44 GB file transfer, the registered writing speed was around 9.45 MB/s.

When the USB Type-A was tested with CrystalDiskMark, the speeds actually improved, especially the writing speed. The read and write speeds clocked at 134 mb/s and 12 mb/s respectively.

OUR TAKE
Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C is a flexible, compact storage device which is a great option for those which plan on using it with their smartphone while they’re always on the go.

You can attach the flash drive to your keychain by connecting it to the available lanyard. This will ensure that you will never lose your Mosdart. Both ends come with caps.

What we liked about this drive is that it has a lengthened USB-C connector which will allow connecting to your phone, even though it has the bulkiest of cases.

The flash drive is compatible with the operating systems of most tablets, phones, and PC’s, with the device being read in a few seconds after it gets connected.

The device features ESD and overcurrent protection. The warranty is the shortest on our list, covering the device for just 12 months which is quite limited.

Performance
The Mosdart, the 32 GB version, was tested using the ATTO Disk Benchmark tool. The results showed write speeds from 15-50Mbps and read speed from 30-100Mbps. The write speeds are within the range of the ones that were advertised. Also, the write speeds are some of the fastest on our list.

OUR TAKE
The Mosdart is a light and versatile device which possesses a unique feature that allows it to be used with phones with bulky cases. What is also worth mentioning about this flash drive is its high write speeds.

12. Patriot Stellar-C Type-C/USB 3.1 64GB Flash Drive – Best Flash Drive for Linux Users

The Patriot Stellar is a compact drive that is not very much at first glance; it does not come with exceptional features, but it does its job admirably when it comes to transferring data.

The thumb drive features USB-A and USB-C connectivity, meaning you can switch to transferring data from devices that support either one of the ports.

The Patriot Stellar comes only in two capacities 32GB and 64GB.

It also includes the USB 3.1 standard. The device has read speeds of up to 110mb/s and with specified write speeds that reach 20mb/s. This makes it an average flash drive when compared to the other products featured on our list.

The Patriot Stellar does not come with any built-in security features or an additional app. The device is only ensured by a 2-year warranty, which is rather limited.

The Patriot Stellar is compatible with almost all Windows operating systems, as well as MAC OS and everything over Linux 2.4.

Performance

During the Crystal Disk Mark test, the Patriot 32GB Stellar-C USB 3.1/Type-C Flash Drive outperformed its read speeds with 20 MB/s more than what was advertised on its package.

The write clocked at 16.54 MB/s, a bit lower but close enough.

With the ATTO Disk Benchmark, the device also performed with 20 MB/s more than its advertised read speeds of 110 mb/s. The write performance was on par with the write speeds of 20 mb/s promised.

OUR TAKE
The Patriot Stellar is a durable device which will do its job of transferring and storing data without much of a problem for Linux users.

The Fusion USB drive provides connectivity across multiple types of smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Macs. The device has both USB-A and USB-C connectors, which allow you to connect to all the current 2.0 and 3.0 ports.

The Integral Fusion USB Type-C’s capacity options go up to 128GB. The casing is made out of, zinc alloy, with a rubber cap for the connector. The cap is attached to the casing to prevent you from losing the cap. The combination of metal and rubber makes it one of the most resistant USB C device, as it absorbs shock much better than plastic.

This is the first USB Type-C drive created by Integral, which also supports USB 3.1 connection speeds with 5Gbit/sec bus speeds.

This device is compatible with a variety smartphone devices Samsung Galaxy A8, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, Note 9, Google Pixel 2, Nokia 8, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 6.1, Nokia 5.1, Apple MacBook (2017 models onwards), Chromebooks, Google Pixelbook, and all Windows operating systems.

  • Up to 200 MB/s* Read / 75 MB/s* Write (64 GB)
  • Up to 200 MB/s* Read / 95 MB/s* Write (128 GB)

The device does not have any built-in security features, nor does it have any file management apps that can be installed. While the flash drive is secured by a two-year warranty, it is not that much compared to other entries in our list.

Performance

In spite of its USB 3.1 connectivity and producer claims, the read speeds clock at 90mb/s, which is rather low compared to other drives we have featured so far that have over 100mb/s.

The write speeds are also very low, clocking it at 15mb/s.

OUR TAKE
The Integral is one of the sturdiest USB Type C flash drives that seamlessly connects to all Windows devices, as well as a myriad of other devices.
