Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation Wi-Fi standard focused on improving the features of the previous generations. It is specially designed to increase the speed and efficiency and reduce the amount of congestion in the network.

It was developed with the aim of providing for the ever-increasing number of devices running with the help of the internet.

As faster internet is constantly in demand, this scientific innovation will be deemed to be a huge success, especially in times when users consume more and more bandwidth, demanding apps, games, and videos on their laptops and smartphones.

The all-new Wi-Fi 6 is not just a speed boost but the impact of this will be far-fetched. This is not a traditional increase but more like a future-facing upgrade which is designed to make sure that the speed doesn’t come to a halt after a few years down the road. In simpler words, this technology has a feature of upgrading and disseminating the speed to the devices.

This does not happen all at once but the speed keeps increasing with time.

Benefits of Wi-Fi 6

Greater data transfer speed

Each upgrade in the Wi-Fi generation comes with an increase in the data transfer speed. The Wi-Fi 6 comes with a speed upgrade of about 3.9 Gbps which takes the new speed of this Wi-Fi to roughly 10 Gbps. Another striking feature is that the entire 10 Gbps speed need not go to a singular device but is mostly split up among devices across a complete area. This increases the potential speed for all devices in that particular area. This drastic increase in speed is achieved by combining the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum bands.

Increased battery life

Another major benefit of this new generation Wi-Fi is that it increases the battery life of the devices that access the Wi-Fi. This improvement is important for an average user. This is availed through a feature that is known as target wake time. This feature enables the Wi-Fi access point to communicate with your device and tell it when to turn the Wi-Fi radio to go to sleep and when to wake up.

Better performance in congested settings

One of the main situations, when Wi-Fi signals go weak, are places where there is extreme competition for a signal. Wi-Fi 6 employs new technologies to increase the utility of Wi-Fi signals by reducing the problems that are caused due to network congestion.

Where Will You See The Benefits of Wi-Fi 6

Upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 can have a multitude of reasons, but there are some instances where upgrading is the best option. Here are a few situations where upgrading to 802.11 ax will matter the most to your device:

  • While playing data speed intensive games such as PUBG, Fortnite, etc.
  • Augmented and Virtual reality-based applications and games
  • Streaming 4k and above resolution content
  • Have multiple devices that need to be connected to the internet simultaneously
  • Online creative as well as productivity-based tasks
  • Increased number of devices being connected to the same Wi-Fi connection, to make sure that all devices get optimum data transfer speed.

Things to Consider While Buying a Wi-Fi 6 Laptop

Since the technology is fairly new, the number of laptops that are equipped with Wi-Fi 6 is limited. However, this being one of the major overhauls in wireless technology, opting for a laptop with Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11 ax would be future-proof. Here is a list of things you should keep in mind while buying a laptop with Wi-Fi 6.

Processor

One of the most important things you need to take care of is the processor. A laptop that is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 is bound to be exposed to high data transfer speeds. In such a scenario, it is important that the processor is capable of handling the data at that speed. Otherwise, the processor would prove as a bottleneck for the device and you won’t be able to utilize the full capacity of Wi-Fi 6.

Battery

Although Wi-Fi 6 increases the battery life of the devices it is used on, this is something you should consider while buying any laptop.

Graphics Card

Another aspect to consider while buying a laptop is the graphics processor which helps you enjoy the display. The last thing you want is your Wi-Fi 6 enabled laptop drops frames while gaming or watching videos.

Design

Everyone wishes to buy a laptop with an impressive design. These days, people prefer laptops which are light-weight, slim, sleek and pleasing to the eyes. There are lots of laptops with varying designs in the market, some of them can even be rotated 360 degrees and be made into a tablet.

Screen

Screen size is also an important factor you should consider while choosing your laptop. While a smaller screen size increases the portability, it reduces the display area. The screen size affects the overall experience to a great extent. Apart from the size, you should also consider the type and resolution of the screen while making a choice.

Let’s go over a few laptops that have this technology integrated into them.

1. Asus ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 – The Ultimate Creator Champion

This is one of those rare laptops that you don’t come across that often. This is an example of what a company can achieve when they push themselves. Asus has gone all-in to make this laptop one-of-a-kind. Asus has carved a niche for itself in the second screen and extreme performance category. The Laptop comes with 32 Gigs of DDR4 RAM and 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD.

Design

The Laptop looks stunning with an all-metal body and diamond-cut chamfered edges. The lid itself looks quite unique as it features a non-centered logo. It also comes with a soft stand that attaches to the back of the device, which folds to give additional height to the laptop display.

When we open the lid, the laptop comes with a different kind of hinge that raises itself to a height. The layout of the keyboard itself has been completely changed to accommodate the massive second screen, which in turn has pushed the keyboard to the bottom of the laptop. To get the comfort, we will have to add an additional ergonomics hand rest that comes in the box.

The keyboard itself has a very nice journey when the keys are pressed. The keyboard also comes with a trackpad that doubles as a Numpad, when it’s turned on. The device overall is very compact and can be easily moved around due to its 2.5 kg weight.

Processor and Graphics

Intel’s 9th Gen Intel Core i9-9980HK processor has an eight-core CPU, running at a base clock speed of 2.40 GHz with turbo boost up to 5.00 GHz combined with Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GDDR5 VRAM.

Display

The laptop comes with 15.6″ 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) OLED NanoEdge touch screen glossy main display, with very slim side bezels that are just 5mm wide and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. This device has an 89% screen to body ratio and a 170-degree viewing angle. Even the secondary display, which Asus calls the screen pad is 4k UHD, with 3840 x 1100 resolution, which supports active pen input. The main display is glossy while the secondary display is matte finished.

2. Microsoft Surface Pro 7 – Versatile 2-in-1 laptop

When it comes to 2-in-1 laptops, Microsoft’s Surface line of devices is in the league of their own. They provide the best of both worlds to their users. Microsoft pretty much created this whole new market segment, of 2-in1s thanks to their foresight. The interaction with this laptop is very natural due to its thin and light profile. Bundled with the tablet comes a fast charger that is capable of charging the device from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes, thanks to its 65W power brick.

One quirk of surface 7 pro is that it doesn’t ship with type cover or stylus. So, we would suggest you buy this device as a bundle with type cover and stylus to save some money.

Design

The chassis of the Surface Pro 7 comes in 2 color variants, Platinum and Matt Black made of magnesium with a unique finish, which makes the tablet lightweight and strong. Weighing at just 1.70 pounds, using it to write, type and draw become a breeze. Surface Pro 7 looks the most polished as well as the only tablet to come with a magnetic kickstand that is very durable and goes all the way back while adjusting the viewing angles. This helps in keeping the device propped up while watching a movie or Tv show. Even with the kickstand, the profile of the tablet is quite slim, keeping the aesthetics even.

The Keyboard or the Type Cover as Microsoft calls it, easily snaps to the connector on the sides of the tablet. The keyboard itself is very well built with a good amount of key travel and backlight, this makes using the keyboard a delight. The trackpad is very precise with tactile feedback. When closed the keyboard, ends up being a nice cover to the tablet offering a decent amount of protection.

Processor and Graphics

The Surface Pro 7 comes with an Intel Core i5-1035G4 processor, which is a quad-core CPU with a base clock of 1.1 GHz that can be boosted up to 3.7 GHz in turbo mode. The processor has an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics which is far superior compared to intel’s UHD 620 Integrated Graphics that comes with lower-spec core i3 processors.

Display

This tablet’s touch-sensitive screen measures 12.3 inches with a 2,736 x 1,824 resolution that translates to 267 pixels per inch, having a 3:2 screen to body ratio. The tablet comes with a Pixelsense display with a 10-point multi-finger touch. The screen covers the color gamut really well, it is a 100% sRGB and 76% AdobeRGB, which is ideal for creative professionals. Windows Hello is a face recognition based authentication that Windows 10 comes with, it uses the device’s front-facing 5 MP 1080p Full HD camera to perform the login.

Ports & Connectivity

  • 1 x USB-C
  • 1 x USB-A
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • 1 x Surface Connect port
  • Surface Type Cover port
  • MicroSDXC card reader
  • Compatible with Surface Dial off-screen interaction
  • Bluetooth Wireless 5.0 technology
OUR TAKE
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 7 comes with an amazing display, that manages to give close to 8 hours of mixed-use, 2 hours lower than what the company claimed 10 hours. With a loud stereo speaker, it is not only best buy for content consumption, but it is also a perfect buy for the creatives who use software such as adobe photoshop or premiere pro.
PROS

  • Expandable storage
  • Stylus support
  • Bright, Vivid Display
  • Phenomenal Build Quality
CONS

  • No thunderbolt in the USB-C port
  • Thicker bezels
  • Type Cover and Stylus need to be bought separately
  • Limited Ports

3. MSI Prestige 14 – Best Productivity Laptop

MSI is quite well known in the gaming market, which is where the bulk of their laptop sales takes place. Lately, a new market catering to young professionals has formed, who might need an extra bit of graphic power along with well-endowed internals.

Prestige 14 is that laptop, MSI has designed targeting people who would need a small form factor with powerful hardware. This device can churn through creative and productive workloads effortlessly thanks to its amazing graphics card, 512 Gb NVME storage and 16 GB of RAM that would be more than enough to run through multiple instances of productive applications.

Design

The complete Chassis of the laptop is made from aluminum, giving it a very slick look. However, the build feels less sturdy, especially when we look at the bottom panel. Weighing at 2.8 pounds the device feels quite light which is coupled with a 10-hour battery pack.

The keypad offers a good amount of feedback while pressed keeping their target audience in mind who are into heavy productivity and creative professionals. The keyboard had to be re-designed by the MSI team to be more legible very different from that of a gaming laptop.

But the main attraction is the massive touchpad, it is close to 4 inches, drawing the entire attention to itself. Thanks to windows precision drivers on top of that, navigation and multi-touch gestures end up being very smooth.

Processor and Graphics

The device comes with a 10th generation core i5- 10210U Quad-core processor running at a base clock speed of 1.60 GHz that can be boosted to 4.20 GHz in turbo mode. What makes the device stand out is its max-q series of discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX1650 GPU with a 4 GB DDR5 VRAM.

Display

The laptop’s 14-inch screen comes with a Full HD (1920×1080), IPS-Level panel, sporting a thin bezel. This is a 100% sRGB Display, which helps professionals accurately recreate the colors. The screen flips all the way to the back, giving the user a wide space to make adjustments that suit their viewing angle.

Ports & Connectivity

  • Bluetooth Wireless 5.0 technology
  • 2x USB Type-A 2.0
  • 2x USB Type-C 3.1 (3.1 Gen 2), Thunderbolt 3, Power Delivery (PD), DisplayPort
  • Micro SD Card reader
  • Fingerprint reader
OUR TAKE
It is advertised as a content creation laptop, however, for the hardware we get the laptop ends up being more of a productivity beast. The color-accurate display panel does come of help when there is color-sensitive work. One shouldn’t consider this laptop if the intention is to play some heavy games. The GTX 1650 even though capable isn’t designed to give gaming performance on this laptop.
PROS

  • Small form factor
  • Powerful GPU
  • Color accurate screen
CONS

  • Heating issues
  • Loose ports

4. Dell XPS 15 – Business Productivity Wonder

Dell has been a well-respected brand among all segments of users. They are one of the oldest laptop manufacturers in the list. Even though the ideal audience of Dell XPS 15 would be casual home users or college students, this laptop has built quality and specs are so amazing they easily enter the business laptop category.

The laptop is equipped with a 6-Cell 97Whr battery pack ensuring at least 9-hour battery life under a normal workload. Dell XPS 15 comes fitted with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and 1TB PCIe SSD storage.

Design

The outer aluminum shell is CNC machined and the inner area of the laptop has a carbon fiber texture finish, this makes the laptop look like a beautiful and durable sandwich.

The laptop seems to have borrowed the minimalist looks of MacBook Pro and added its own max to it. The result is a well-made business looking laptop that’s hard to miss especially when we factor in the subtle aesthetic enhancements dell has made to make it look absolutely premium. The power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor.

The laptop weighs 4 pounds which is not the lightest of the bunch, but it doesn’t need to be light after all the features it has. The touchpad sports Windows Precision Drivers support that enhances user interaction.

The keyboard is average, as the feedback seems to be quite less due to the shallow key travel coming in at 1.3 mm. It is usable in dark thanks to its two-stage backlighting system.

Processor and Graphics

Intel’s 9th Gen Intel Core i7 -9750H processor has a six-core CPU, running at a base clock speed of 2.60 GHz with turbo boost up to 4.50 GHz combined with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR5 VRAM.

Display

With 4k UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution, the screen just almost extends edge to edge giving its users a wider viewing angle. 500-nits Display brightness coupled with 100% AdobeRGB means the color would be accurately reproduced, enabling business users to deliver nothing but the best.

Ports & Connectivity

  • SD card slot
  • USB 3.1 Gen 1 x 2

  • Short battery life

6. Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop – Cheapest Wi-Fi 6 Laptop

Acer is one of the top manufacturers of mass-market laptops. They are well known for their aggressively priced quality products. The Aspire 5 Slim laptop by Acer is no different, it is the cheapest entry-level Wi-Fi 6 laptop in the market.

Though there are small cutbacks due to the price-sensitive aspect of the laptop, nothing that would hamper the overall experience of the product. This laptop features an Intel i3 processor with 4 GB DDR4 Memory and 128 GB PCIe NVMe SSD Storage.

Design

The Chassis of the laptop is made of good quality polycarbonate or plastic. It does feel sturdy when held in hand inspiring confidence in the material quality. It definitely doesn’t compare against builds made with aluminum, but the brushed metal finish makes it look premium. A benefit of having a polycarbonate body is the weight, it is light enough to be carried anywhere especially if you are a student, this should feel right at home weighing in at 5.7 pounds.

This laptop also sports a full-sized backlit keyboard giving responsive tactile feedback with a comfortable resistance to key presses.

Processor and Graphics

Intel’s 10th gen core i3-10110U processor has a Dual-core CPU, running at a base clock speed of 2.1 GHz with a turbo boost of up to 4.1 GHz. It is combined with intel’s UHD Integrated Graphics 620. This is an entry-level processor, and we can do away with calling it a budget processor. However, what it brings to the table is unparalleled power efficiency, this laptop can easily last more than 9.5 hours once fully charged.

Display

Acer Aspire 5 is a 15.6 inch Full HD IPS Panel with a 60 Hertz refresh Rate, with a Max brightness of 240 nits. At this price point, we would expect a 720p display but the inclusion of 1080p is an impressive addition.
