Are you looking for the best gaming laptop in 2020? Then you’ve come to the right place. Here at ThunderboltLaptop, we’ve compiled a list of gaming laptops with 144Hz refresh rate and a review of the best gaming laptops on the market.
If you are a newbie in the gaming world, you must be wondering; what does a 144Hz laptop mean?
Table of Contents
What is a 144Hz laptop?A 144Hz laptop has a display with 144Hz refresh rate, which refers to the number of times your display updates per second. This results in smooth and fluid gameplay with no motion blur and uneven motions.
60hz vs. 144Hz
If you’ve used 60Hz displays all your life, you may not think much of 144Hz, but the difference is quite noticeable when you put them side by side.
Does a 144Hz screen impact battery life?Yes, 144hz can affect the battery life of the device. Setting the display to 60hz can help correct this issue in most laptops.
Is a 144Hz laptop worth it?
The price of 144hz screens is going down. If the laptop can output more than 100fps, then you should opt for a high refresh rate display.
While it will not make you a pro, the increased smoothness and lower input latency will give you a far more enjoyable experience.
As far as improving your skills, it depends on the player. However, many consider that the silky smooth movement and reduced screen tearing can raise the ceiling on your aiming and reaction time. And along with the simple fact that it makes playing more fun, a 144Hz display can give you a slight competitive edge.
The buttery smooth experience doesn’t improve only games but can make the whole desktop experience more enjoyable.
For years now, playing demanding games with great detail levels and excellent resolution meant you had to buy a powerful desktop. The case is now different with most computer manufacturers designing powerful gaming laptops with all the juice you need to run graphic-intensive games.
The laptops come with powerful GPUs, the likes of NVidia GeForce RTX 2080 with Max-Q, which guarantees smooth and seamless game flow from your notebook.
What’s more interesting is that you don’t need a laptop with a powerful graphics card to play high-end PC games. You can play the most graphic-intensive game from your ultraportable and thinner notebook. If you’re wondering why, the answer is external graphics processing units.
You can hook up desktop-class GPUs to your notebook using eGPU enclosures. For more information, check our article on the cheapest Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures.
144Hz Refresh Rate and Gaming
Many power gamers are moving away from screen displays with 60Hz panels because of their limitations. While these kinds of displays are good for personal entertainment experiences, they are slowly becoming dilapidated in the gaming arena.
If you’re playing a game that renders more than 60 frames per second on a 60Hz screen, you’ll experience what is known as “screen tearing.” This happens because the GPU renders more frames per second than your display screen. The result is screen tearing, stuttering, lagging, and uneven motion.
So, what is the solution?
A higher refresh rate. A 144Hz screen display can handle up to 144 frames per second which leads to smoother gameplay with no lagging or screen tearing. Pretty amazing, isn’t it?
The adaptive refresh rate is another technology that can reduce screen tearing. NVidia calls this G-Sync while AMD refers to it as FreeSync. Displays with G-Sync refreshes each time a new output emerges from the GPU. With this, there are no cases of uneven motion or lagging.
Here’s a list of the gaming laptops with 144Hz refresh rate. Some are equipped with NVidia’s G-Sync technology to deliver even more fluid gaming experience.

Asus released two models of the 2020 ROG Zephyrus G15 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS. One has 144Hz and the other with a 240Hz refresh rate. The 240Hz model is more responsive and has better color performance, but it’s pricey. In this review, we focus on the 144Hz ROG Zephyrus G15 with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti.

In terms of storage, both the ROG Zephyrus G15 models come with 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. It’s a decent amount of storage offering faster transfer speeds and boot times. This model features 16GB of 3200MHz DDR4 memory, which is enough for gaming and even multitasking. The lightweight design lets you carry the laptop to work or enjoy gaming on the go. And with an energy-efficient processor, you can go for long hours until the next recharge. Unlike other gaming laptops with flashy lights and weird angles, this laptop fits well in an office environment, though the lack of webcam may limit you.

Choosing the Best 144Hz Gaming Laptop
The moment you type in “gaming laptops” click the search button, you’ll be met with a lot of options for different gaming laptops each with different specs. The question remains: how do you select the ideal gaming laptop?
Here are the things to look out for when choosing the best gaming laptop:
You need the power to run the most demanding and graphics-intensive games. Most gaming laptops come with the 9th generation and NVidia RTX 20s series. This guarantees smooth and fluid gameplay for all the latest games.
If you’re under a tight budget, an 8th generation chip can be ideal, back up with an average NVidia graphics and you’re good to go.
The 15-inch screen is the most popular for gaming laptops. You can go for the 17-inch screen if you’re ready to bear the weight. Factor in Full HD display and the gaming arena is ready for you.
Anything less than a 15-inch size isn’t ideal for most modern games. The chances of getting a 14-ich with 144Hz refresh rates are very low. Unless you are ready to live with screen tearing and motion blur, go with 15-inch screens and above.
Keyboards are very fundamental in the gaming space. Most excellent gaming laptops feature per-key and zone customizable RGB backlighting. While per-key backlighting keyboards are the best, they carry a relatively higher price tag. Other factors to consider include, hotkeys and WASD highlights.
Well, it all comes down to how much you’re willing to spend. If you want the best powerhouses and customizable machines, it will cost you an arm and a leg. These machines have everything you could wish for – topnotch hardware, ultra-clear visuals, and upgradeability.
However, you don’t have to break the bank for excellent gaming machines. There are cheaper options with competitive specs that give the premium laptops headaches. Albeit the display might be clearer than the high-end machines, these laptops can give you a fluid gaming experience for a cheaper price.
Which gaming laptop suits your needs?
Well, to be frank, you have the best answer. It depends on what specs you want from a gaming laptop. Make sure to consider the above buying guide for a powerful gaming machine. Remember you can always upgrade your GPU by using external GPU enclosures if you don’t like the performance of your graphics card.
